Meet Steve Santos

He might be considered a “loner” or “Mr. X”, but Steve is a very likeable guy with a calm demeanor. He usually shows up at the course in the afternoon, alone, and plays 18 holes, alone, and plays to a solid 9 handicap. He joined our membership in 2014 and plays over 140 rounds a year. That's 2520 holes of golf at some 11,200 strokes, give or take a few. What he lacks in skill is replaced with good course management. Steve is a very smart player and would be a great partner in any team event. He says he needs improvement with his fairway woods, but that would bring him down to a 5 handicap.

Steve thinks that hole #10 here at MSR is the most challenging for him. It requires a perfect tee shot and a good or lucky second shot. Hole #5 is not his favorite. Something about the elevation change has him baffled. Steve wants to become a “scratch” golfer and we think he has the tools to meet his goal. However, we think he will have to play 280 rounds a year, and take over 22,000 strokes to find that consistent groove.

Steve Santos has all the shots, however, they don't always match the situation. For example, the time he sculled a wedge on #7, skipping his ball across the water, and hitting the flag stick to leave a six foot putt for birdie. By the way, and we are not surprised, he did make the putt.

The View Point

"If I could have breakfast with that view every day, I would!  The food is as good as the view - EXCELLENT!  Thanks!"  A. Rouse, Director of San Ramon, CA

February, 2015 Newsletter

Most of January was great for golf because so many days were sunny and mild. Temperatures in the 60's provided excellent conditions and many of our members took advantage and played a lot of golf. Our “Super Bowl Skins Game” attracted good players from all around Red Bluff, Redding, Fall River, Chico, McCloud, and even Mount Shasta. Some of the big winners were Tom Boehme, Jerry Lemos, Chad Trevisan, Jim Clark, Jeff Baldo, Scott Waite, David Trevisan, and Dave Turk.

We didn't record a single “Hole-in-One” in the month of January. However, a few players sure got close. Jim Clark knocked it within four inches on hole #13. Keith Wood hit it five inches on #7. Jeff Baldo was six inches from #7. Dave Trevisan made a two on the par four #6, but he never saw it go in the hole. Chad Trevisan scored a two on the par four #8 and he did see it go in the hole. Kevin Flynn got a net two on #9. Those guys are really good. Did you know that people who suffer from insanity actually enjoy every minute of it?

Our next big event will be a couples tournament on Valentine's Day, Saturday, February 14th. This two player scramble will feature teams consisting of husband and wife, husband and ex-wife, boy friend with girl friend, soon to be married couples, soon to be separated couples, and couples who have never met before. Call the Golf Shop for more details. Sign up as soon as possible so we know how much Champagne to order.

Did You Know....

Golf is one of the two only sports to be played on the moon. On February 6, 1967 Alan Bartlett “Al” Shepard, Jr.performed a one-handed swing with a six-iron, sending the ball flying through the moon’s low-gravity atmosphere. And in case you were wondering, javelin is the other sport that was reportedly played on the moon.

Golf is an excellent workout that burns calories while promoting greater muscle mass. According to the health and fitness website ShapeFit.com, a typical 190-pound golfer will burn 431 calories per hour — assuming he or she is walking across the course instead of riding a golf cart.

The term “caddie” was created by Mary Queen of Scots a long time ago. She loved to play golf and would have young cadets from France carry her clubs. Thus, the term, “caddie”.

The first ever golf balls were made of goose feathers. Today, golf balls are made of multi-layered urethane and sometimes covered with…. goose stuff.
